An Afternoon in Edinburgh w/ Kids

Edinburgh Castle

A few weeks ago (who am I kidding, this was well over a month ago) we had family come visit from both sides- Rob’s parents and brother for a wedding we were attending and my uncle and his family during the school holidays. It was a busy week- from trying to get my work hours in, spend time with both sides of the family and attend the wedding party it was pretty cray.
Anyway, on one of the days I decided to take the morning and afternoon off to spend some time with my cousins who are 9 and 15. Suddenly I realised this might not be so easy….how does one entertain a hyperactive 9 yr old and a teenager? 🤔
Well, I went for the easy route. I only had four hours on me and here’s what we got up to:

1. Take them to Camera Obscura
I had been wanting to go here for ages anyway so I think I was almost more excited than them. Even though it was packed on a Tuesday morning it was definitely worth the visit (even though that mirrored maze thing made me v. dizzy). There’s lots to do and something for everyone! Also- Camera Obscura has some great views from the top so don’t miss out on getting some nice photos when you’re there!

2. Feed them
I get hangry and it’s no good sight. Kids get even hangrier. So after Camera Obscura I dragged them to Five Guys- great choice for everyone! Plus, I love those soda machines 😏
A little silly side story- when we were waiting for our burgers I was so hungry that I tried to throw like 4 peanuts into my mouth but managed to also throw a tiny piece of peanut shell into my eye. It was the tiniest little thing that it was hard to even see it in the bathroom mirror. At one point as I was trying to dig it out it disappeared behind my eye when I blinked and I lost it. My uncle who’s a doctor told me it’s not a big deal and that it’ll eventually come out on it’s own so I went around with the most painful eye for the next 7 hours. I finally managed to get it out with a cotton wool bud and my god, the relief! It’s so annoying how the tiniest of things can be so painful!

3. Have a wander but make it fun
After eating our bellies full of burgery goodness I thought it would be a good idea to try and show them around a bit, but I had to make it fun. We checked out some of the closes by the Royal Mile and I googled a few stories from them, like Mary King’s Close, the most haunted close in Edinburgh 👻
Also- I’ll be taking over @choicehotelsglobal Insta story next month where I show some of Edinburgh’s closes so be sure to check it out. I’ll post about it more on IG when I know I’m doing the takeover!

4. Lastly, feed them again.
This time load ’em up on sugar. Like at Lovecrumbs, which is where we went. Cakes and coffee galore. Everyone will be satisfied.

Were they happy? Yes. Was I happy? YES. And I was able to get some sunny autumnal photos of lovely Edinburgh along the way 🤗
